CLEVELAND — Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump painted a dark picture of the condition of the United States on the final night of the Republican National Convention. He described a country in danger and how he alone can fix it.
“When I take the oath of office next year,” Trump said when accepting the nomination Thursday night. “I will restore law and order to our country.”
Trump’s roughly hour and 15 minute long speech focused heavily on the safety of Americans everywhere, including their own neighborhoods.
“We are going to build a great border wall to stop illegal immigration, to stop the gangs and the violence and to stop the drugs from pouring into our communities,” Trump said.
The Republican presidential nominee said he will lead angered Americans who have been disappointed with the government and the elites who oversee it.
“I will be your voice,” Trump said.
While he loved his life in business, Trump said now his goal is to work for his country and for the people of America.
“It is time to show the whole world that America is back—bigger and better and stronger than ever before,” Trump said.
Trump also used his acceptance speech as an opportunity to attack Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president.
“[Clinton’s] single greatest accomplishment may be committing such an egregious crime and getting away with it,” Trump said about the Clinton email scandal, “especially when others, who have done far less, have paid so dearly.”
Trump said he will soon begin focusing on defeating her and uniting America rather than dividing it.
During Trump’s speech, the Indiana delegation cheered and chanted.
“What he is saying in his message, it’s very good. It’s well thought out,” delegate Joshua Huff of Indianapolis said. “He is a great businessman and he will straighten things out.”
Huff said he thinks vice presidential candidate Gov. Mike Pence is a great addition to the ticket and that Pence will help Trump come November.
“I appreciate Trump’s rhetoric. He knows how to talk to his audience,” Huff said.
Chants of “USA” filled the room as Trump’s family, alongside Pence and his family, made their way to stage, concluding the 2016 Republican National Convention.
