INDIANAPOLIS — Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann delivered her resignation letter to Gov. Mike Pence and Indiana legislators Monday.

“It is with a conflicted heart that I share my resignation effective Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at 5 p.m.,” she wrote.

Ellspermann announced on Feb. 9 that she would step down while she pursued the opportunity to become the next president of Ivy Tech Community College. The college has not announced who will be the school’s new president.

After Ellspermann’s resignation, Pence will nominate former Chairman of the State Republican Party Eric Holcomb as her successor in a message to both Senate President Pro Tempore David Long and House Speaker Brian Bosma.

The Senate and House are expected to confirm the nomination through roll call votes Thursday morning. After the vote, the Senate will send a message to the House notifying them of the confirmation vote, and the House will send a message to the Senate notifying them of the confirmation vote.

Upon confirmation, the swearing-in ceremony for Holcomb is scheduled for Thursday.

Holcomb had been running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Republican U.S. Sen. Dan Coats, before dropping out of the race to become the lieutenant governor.
